Galileo's Thermometer
Galileo was one of the most renown Renaissance scientists. His discoveries greatly influenced the scientific revolution taking place in the late 16th century. One of Galileo's discoveries was that as the temperature of a liquid increases, its buoyancy decreases. Galileo's findings were translated by instruments showing room temperature from 16-25 deg.C and 60-78 deg.F. Sealed glass spheres with finely calibrated counterweights float in a non-toxic liquid sensitive to temperature. Floating up and downwards the lowest floating sphere from the top indicates the actual room temperature. The instrument's Latin name is Thermetrolento which stands for Slow Thermometer. The tube is hand blown glass, all parts are hand cast in solid brass and hand tooled to perfection. 22.5"H

The production of these instruments is extremely complicated. Each ball is calibrated to exactly .36 degree F. Two glass balls differ in weight by only 6/1000 of a gram. Temperatures marked in Fahrenheit unless otherwise requested. The liquid inside the Galileo is non toxic and flame resistant. Available colors: black, cognac, bordeaux, blue, green, multicolor
